Braunston Village Hall - Hiring and Information

Your Café to host Literary Event 2 Dec 2015 There is a new book published by Braunston Residents!

There is a new book published in Braunston. Pat and Sybil Herlihy of Mill Close have produced a 250 page book and 300 image CD about the history of southwest Ireland as seen through the eyes of the people of the parish of Ballyvourney in County Cork.

Pat and Sybil will be in Your Cafe to show copies of the work and to talk with visitors from 10.30 - 12.30 on Saturday 5th December. They will sign copies, if required, and can send them to UK addresses and throughout the world. More details are available by email from ballyvourney3501@gmail.com. The main purpose of the day, however is to chat with friends, answer questions and have a cup of coffee in the cafe.

There are some surprises if compared with the standard account: no St Patrick, women taking a major part in bringing Christianity, the Normans beaten by the Irish, Cromwell leaving quickly, huge numbers dead in the famine, many emigrations, those who stayed stubbornly continuing to speak together in Irish. The early Celtic Church is presented in detail [with laymen deeply involved] and there is a sympathetic discussion of what it takes to make an immigrant. Possibly for the first time in local history accounts copies of all the national archived maps and documents relating to the parish are included on the CD.
