Households across Daventry District will be able to leave their real Christmas trees out for a one-off seasonal recycling collection in the new year.

Daventry District Council’s (DDC) environmental services partner Daventry Norse says it will collect real trees if they are put out alongside bins during the week beginning 21 January 2019. This is an extra collection for all homes, including those not currently subscribed to the garden waste service.

There are no communal collection points for real Christmas trees, but if residents wish to recycle their trees sooner, then they can take them to their local household waste recycling centre.

Residents are also being advised of an extra collection of the blue-lidded recycling bins which will take place in the week beginning 7 January. People should put their blue-lidded bin out alongside any others that are due to be emptied on their usual collection day during that week.

Extra food waste will also be collected over Christmas and New Year – residents should place this in tied-up bags (plastic bags accepted) on top of their food bin on their usual collection day – it is advised to put these out as close to the collection as possible to avoid wildlife getting at them.

For most people, collections will continue to take place on their usual days as scheduled over the Christmas break. However people whose bins are emptied on Tuesdays are advised of the following changes to their schedule:

·         Collections which would have been due on Christmas Day (Tuesday, 25 December) will instead take place on Saturday, 29 December.

·         Collections due on New Year’s Day (Tuesday, 1 January) will instead take place on Saturday, 5 January.

Those subscribed to the garden waste service will continue to receive collections on their usual schedule in the run up to Christmas and New Year, but there will be a break in collections during the second week of January to allow crews to focus on the extra seasonal recycling.

People can check their collection day and set up notifications to remind them which bins to put out by downloading the DDC app for their mobile phone or tablet device.

Available for free from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store, the app can also be used to access the latest news from DDC, as well as information about local facilities, services, shops, bars and restaurants.

Alternatively people can check their bin collection dates and find out more about waste and recycling collections at www.daventrydc.gov.uk/recycling
