Five facts about burglary 10 Aug 2022 Five facts about burglary – protect your home this summer

As the warm weather continues to shine across Northamptonshire, detectives working in the Force’s Burglary Team are issuing advice to help people protect their homes from burglars.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Rogers, said: “First of all I want to make it clear that the only people 'responsible' for a burglary are the burglars themselves and in an ideal situation we would not have to issue crime prevention advice.

“However sadly there are people out there who would look to take advantage of an open door or window in this heat to steal from others.

“In Northamptonshire, the numbers of burglaries has reduced significantly since we launched Operation Crooked in 2019, however the team continues working at pace to decrease those numbers even further.”

Burglars are often opportunistic thieves who prey on houses and flats. They seek out any opening that they can take advantage of, specifically doors and windows that are left open or unlocked or are easy to force. Anything of value that they might spot through a window will only spur them on. But it really doesn’t take much to deter these thieves – just smart thinking.

Please take a look at the below five facts about burglary to give you the best chance of protecting your home from burglars.

- Burglars target homes that they think will contain valuables. A sure giveaway is leaving packaging from expensive items outside your front door

- Burglars often look for homes with windows or doors left open or with vulnerable features that they can exploit

- Burglars are aware of the times when someone is expected to be away from their house such as during the school run or holidays. Don’t advertise that you are going to be away on social media

- Burglars typically do not want to be seen or heard and if they see crime prevention technology like CCTV cameras or video doorbells, they are more likely to move on

- Sheds and garages are often vulnerable as they are not that secure and contain tools which the burglar can use to assist them to gain entry to a home. Make sure they’re locked and nothing of significant value is inside them
