Rebuilding of N.B. Lucy 7 Jul 2014 (Braunston History Society) Dick Herne History Society visit to see the rebuilding of N.B Lucy at Tess Yard, Braunston Turn.

On a beautiful, bright, sunny morning on the 1st July 10 members and guests of the history society were welcomed by Peter Boyce to Tess Yard to see the progress being made on the rebuilding of the wooden narrow boat, Lucy.

Peter gave freely of his time, showing us a pictorial history of the boat that was built over 60 years ago. We were also given a tour of his workshops and introduced to some of the tools used by craftsmen from the last century and earlier.

We also viewed other narrow boats in varying stages of being rebuilt. Peter gave us a really clear and interesting picture of what had to be undertaken and the problems that had to be overcome in order to bring these wonderful working boats back their very best.

Over a welcome mug of tea Peter answered questions and gave us a greater insight into the challenges he faces in this important restoration work. Thank you, Peter, for giving up your time and presenting us with a really interesting visit to your yard.

NOTE! Peter is giving a talk to the history society early next year on Tuesday, 17th February 2015 at 7.30 p.m. in the village hall. He will be concentrating on the restoration of wooden narrow boats. This is a talk not to be missed!
