September - Unpredictable weather 13 Oct 2024 Hedge cutting and weir clearance replaces painting of locks

To paint or not to paint? That was the question for the first task party in September. With the weather so unpredictable and the gates at lock 2 still damp from the previous day's rain we decided to cut the hedges at lock 2 instead. With a crew of 5, assisted by 8 volunteers from Nat West Bank, the hedges were cut, arisings stacked and lock maintenance of the flight performed. The rain eventually arrived around lunchtime calling time on a successful morning's work.

For the second outing, with the weather smiling on us for a change, the BCS crew of 8 cleared the weirs at locks 3, 4 & 5. In addition an overhanging tree was cleared near the tunnel entrance, the bollards edged at lock 3 and the french drain below lock 4 exposed.

Further ad hoc task parties this month saw the completion of the hedge cutting at lock1, the cutting of the hedge at the UCC dayboat parking area and completion of the lock maintenance with painting of the cill markers and edging of bollards.
